From the locals, with love
Welcome to Chicago! We know that walking on two feet is a little different than driving 2 tons on four wheels through your morning Starbucks drive-thru, so here's a little guide to help you survive your stay and keep the locals happy.
Walk on the right side of the sidewalk. The left is for passing.Same as the highway you just moved off of. Slow traffic keeps right.
If you're walking on the right, make room for people walking the other direction on your left. They're doing the same thing. It's a system. It works when everyone's in it.
The entrance door is the one on the right as you enter a building. The exit door is on the right as you leave.Yes, that's the same rule twice. Yes, it needs to be.
When riding an escalator, stand to the right. The left is for walkers. The person behind you has a train to catch. The person behind them also has a train to catch.
When riding the bus, exit out the back door whenever possible. The front is for loading.Walking to the front to say "thank you" is sweet. Do it from the back door. Louder.
And finally, when riding the L, let passengers off before you get on.You know what? Same with elevators too.

We'll email them a personalized copy with your name on it. You'll need to confirm from your inbox first, so nobody can send it as you. And don't worry, we don't save either of your email addresses or sign you up for mailing lists. We detest spam as much as you do... Unless you're spamming your friends about being good transplants.
